Perhaps the bottle was dropped and broken like the ones pictured above, or maybe, even if the bottle is intact the contents may not be in their original condition -  the ship may have become dislodged from the ‘sea’ , the masts and yards may be broken or the sails have become fragile over the years and started to disintegrate.
